Lines of research

Our laboratory, aiming at a recognition in the Université Paris-Saclay as a major actor in the field of the factory of the future, concentrates its strengths towards four main research focuses, in the continuity of it's historical themes. But the guidance is now set on the notions of smart product and smart manufacturing within industry 4.0, with the notion of digital twin in sight.

Digital twin

In the background, the laboratory is establishing a federative digital twin pilot project, configurable and predictive, either at the smart product or at the smart manufacturing level. This project is fed on the one hand by multi-scale models, multi-physical integrating geometric and non-geometric faults, and on the other hand by in-situ measurements of the parts or systems producing them.

Line 1: Shape acquisition, identification and processing

Métrologie laser

We work to master the discrete data representativeness of multi-sensors, multi-scales digitisation in the context of metrology and 3D inspection.

Characterization of multi-sensor measurement systems through the development of qualification protocols.
This is to allow the identification of critical parameters and their control for the generation of quality-controlled data.

New methods will be explored for the processing of multi-sensor, multi-scale data (filtering, registration, fusion, partitioning, association, identification of remarkable characteristics) for the metrological characterization of parts with complex shapes.

Line 2: Numerical models for the specification and control of geometric variations of products

This axis integrates on the one hand the geometrical tolerance through multi-physical models aimed at predicting, via simulation, the deviations of the geometry of the parts and their influence on the assemblies. TolerancingOn the other hand it integrates the conceptualization for the twinning between the virtual and the real.

LURPA works on the implementation of engineering tolerance rupture research projects (new models of representation and treatment of geometry and uncertainties, geometric learning and interoperability, hybrid geometric modelers), projects strongly supported by the Sino-French Tolerancing and Assembly Innovation Center (Sino-French Tolerancing and Assembly Innovation Center) created in 2018 under the leadership of ENS Paris-Saclay and the University of Zhejiang.

LURPA is the major French player in this initiative.

Line 3: Manufacturing processes, performance and steering of poly-articulated systems

Robot system
The laboratory develops tools, models and protocols allowing the qualification, the optimization of performances and the piloting of poly-articulated systems intended for 3D measurement and manufacturing. Multi-sensor / multi-scale in-situ measurement processes will be developed for monitoring and automated modification of manufacturing processes.

This work will mainly build on existing experimental platforms, namely the SLM additive manufacturing cell, the high-speed 5-axis machining center and the robotic cell. This will be completed as part of the FAPS project to implement additive manufacturing processes (deposition of metal wire by laser fusion) subtractive by machining and polishing, and in-situ measurement. Our efforts will have to be maintained in order to have sufficient qualified personnel to operate these instruments.

Line 4: Dependability of production systems

Discrete Events System

It involves, in particular through the modeling and identification of a system by observation of its inputs / outputs, detecting the deviation of the operation of a system and the distance of this deviation from the expected nominal behavior.

It is also a question of proposing protocols organizing the succession of corrective actions to bring to converge the functioning of the system towards its nominal regime.
