Geometric quality of machined parts

Objectives

Our research work under the heading "Geometric quality of machined parts" focuses on the optimization of the manufacturing process of parts with high machining added value. The objective is particularly to control the macro/microgeometric quality and the metallurgical integrity of the resulting surfaces so as to guarantee their performance in service.

The corresponding process is complex and demands multiple skills because it combines numerical calculations and physical behavior. The numerical calculations concern the geometry, from CAD surface modeling to the real-time CAM execution of CNC-programmed trajectories. The physical behavior is that of the articulated mechanical structure which supports the process, from a geometric, dynamic or thermal point of view. More locally, the behavior at the tool/part interfaces is also considered in order to improve the realism of upstream models and optimize the execution of the process.
